  1. Just finished your book- loved it! I was an exchange student for a year in Bergen op Zoom (from NZ) and it totally changed my life. I had to laugh out loud about the loud talk on trains about personal stuff- I can remember before I understood Dutch wondering why everyone was yelling at each other and then, loving being nosey and listening to conversations as I got to grips with the language.

  2. Just finished your book: “ik heb het in een adem uitgelezen!” (I read it in one breath), which is of course an exaggeration but indeed I could not put it down. I have lived in the US as a dual citizen now for more than 50 years and particularly your comments on more modern times were enlightening. I admire the way you connected history. In general: BRAVO!

  3. Our son just moved to the Netherlands to study at one of its great unis. I realized how little I know about this little, special, charming country. (I am German living in London). I came across your book at Schiphol airport. I learned so much and it was so entertaining at the same time, I couldn’t put it down. Thank you!

  4. I so enjoyed your book – many thanks. I have some Dutch friends and have lived in Amsterdam (Vondel park in 1973) and your words rang so true. Thank you for hours of reading pleasure – didn’t want to put the book down / was disappointed when I finsished it – wanting it to continue. Vivien
